Implant Overdenture

A practical treatment option is an implant overdenture. It is relatively economical and restores lip support without resorting to invasive or complex surgical procedures. Implant overdenture is a cost effective modality for both patient and dentist.

Patients with severe maxillary and mandibular atrophy presents problems in the retention of ordinary denture. Denture’s mobility which causes persistent trauma accelerates bone resorption, hence yields an ill-fitting denture. Alteration on masticatory function, alteration in soft tissue contour, soft tissue injuries, limitation of food intake and limitation in social interaction are experienced by fully edentulous patients.

Bone resorption can be minimized, with an implant-supported prosthesis, as well as the stress distribution on the areas of soft tissues. However, there are various contraindication in providing a full-fixed implant restoration. Lingually placed implants often hinders the restoration of the soft tissue contour. Implant-supported overdenture is the most practical treatment of choice due to the following benefits:
1. Effectiveness
2. Neatness
3. Relatively economical method of restoring lip support without recourse to invasive or complex surgical techniques.
